DocJax

OneDrive Search for Public Files

Find files and folders shared publicly from Microsoft OneDrive. DocJax searches OneDrive share links and runs the search on the engine you pick.

File type

OneDrive files are found by their address, so file type doesn’t apply here.

Your search

(site:onedrive.live.com OR site:1drv.ms)

How OneDrive Share Links Work

When someone shares a OneDrive file with anyone who has the link, Microsoft creates an address on onedrive.live.com or a short 1drv.ms link. If that link is posted on a public page, search engines can find and index it.

Work and school OneDrive accounts use SharePoint instead, at addresses ending in sharepoint.com. To search those, pick One website under Where and type sharepoint.com.

How to Search OneDrive Files

  1. Type the topic or file name you're after.
  2. Use the title and address fields under More filters to narrow it down.
  3. Run it on Bing as well as Google. Each engine has indexed a different set of OneDrive links.

The same approach works for Google Drive search, Dropbox search and Box search.

Questions

Can you search public OneDrive files?

Only the ones search engines have indexed, which usually means the share link was posted on a public page. Links sent privately stay out of search.

How do I stop a OneDrive file from showing up?

Open Manage access for the file and remove the anyone-with-the-link sharing. Search engines drop the result once the link stops working.

Do I need a Microsoft account to open a shared OneDrive file?

No. Files shared with anyone who has the link open in the browser without signing in.
