Google Dorks for Finding Documents

These are good starting points. Swap in your own topic or domain.

  • "annual report" filetype:pdf site:.gov finds annual reports from government agencies.
  • syllabus filetype:pdf site:.edu finds course syllabi from universities.
  • "meeting minutes" filetype:pdf site:example.gov finds a city or county’s minutes.
  • intitle:"user manual" filetype:pdf finds product manuals.
  • "price list" (filetype:xls OR filetype:xlsx) finds spreadsheets with prices.
  • site:docs.google.com/presentation "onboarding" finds public Google Slides decks.

For dorks aimed at cloud storage, the Google Drive search and Dropbox search pages have the right site filters set already.

Google Dorks for OSINT

Open source intelligence work leans on the same operators. A site: filter keeps a search inside one company’s domain. Adding filetype:pdf or filetype:xlsx pulls out the reports and spreadsheets it has published, and intitle: narrows to a project or a person’s name. Dorks only show what a search engine already made public, so they are a starting point for research, not a way past a login.

To search by document type alone, go back to the document search engine on the home page.

Questions

What is Google dorking?

Google dorking means using advanced search operators such as site:, filetype: and intitle: to find pages and files a normal search buries. Researchers, journalists and OSINT investigators use it to find public documents fast.

Is Google dorking legal?

Searching is legal, because the operators only filter results Google already shows to anyone. What you do with a result can still break the law, such as logging in to a system you weren't given access to.

Do Google dorks work on Bing?

Mostly. Bing understands site:, filetype: and intitle:, but not Google's after: and before: date operators. Yandex uses mime:pdf in place of filetype:pdf, and DocJax swaps that in for you.

Why does my dork return no results?

Too many filters at once usually cause it. Remove one operator at a time, check the spelling of the domain and make sure there is no space after the colon.
