How Do Public Google Drive Files Get Found?
A Drive file becomes searchable when its sharing is set to “Anyone with the link” and that link is posted somewhere a search engine crawls, like a forum, a class page or a news article. Google and Bing follow the link and add the file to their index.
Files that were shared with named people only, or never linked anywhere public, stay out of every search engine.
How to Search Public Google Drive Files
- Type the topic, title or phrase you want.
- Leave Where on Google Drive, or pick Google Docs, Sheets or Slides for one kind of file.
- Add words in the title or address under More filters to narrow it down.
- Run the search on Google first, then Bing, which indexes a different set of Drive links.
Google Docs, Sheets and Slides
Files made in Google’s own apps sit at docs.google.com, not drive.google.com, so they need their own filter. Docs are under /document, Sheets under /spreadsheets and Slides under /presentation. The Where menu has each one.
