Where to Find Free Ebooks Legally
- Project Gutenberg: tens of thousands of public domain books in EPUB, Kindle and plain text.
- Open Library: a catalog of books run by the Internet Archive, with free reading and borrowing.
- Internet Archive: scanned books, old magazines and texts, many free to download. See Internet Archive search.
- Universities (.edu): free textbooks, theses and course readers posted by schools.
In the United States, books published before 1931 are in the public domain, so classics are the easiest books to find free. Newer books are usually still under copyright.
EPUB or PDF?
EPUB is the standard ebook format. Text reflows to fit any screen, which makes it best for phones and e-readers. PDF keeps the exact page layout, which suits textbooks, comics and anything with charts.
Kindles read EPUB through Amazon's Send to Kindle service, so either format works on most devices.
Tips for Finding a Specific Book
- Search the title and the author's last name with exact phrase on.
- Pick EPUB alone for e-readers, or add PDF for textbooks.
- Leave out words like
summaryorreviewto skip pages about the book.
