What You Can Find in Public Spreadsheets

Public spreadsheets are some of the most useful files online: budgets from cities and schools, price lists, product catalogs, inventories, statistics tables and calculators. Government agencies post a lot of their data as Excel files next to the PDF report.

XLS vs XLSX

XLS is the format Excel used up to 2003. XLSX replaced it in Excel 2007. Many data tables on government sites are still XLS, so it pays to search both.

How to Search for Spreadsheets

  1. Describe the data, like school budget or price list, not a question.
  2. Keep Excel selected, and add CSV if you want plain data files too.
  3. Pick Government (.gov) for official statistics.
  4. Add a year in the title field to get the latest version.

For data exports with no formatting, use CSV search. For documents, the Word document search works the same way.

Questions

How do I search for Excel files on Google?

Add filetype:xlsx OR filetype:xls to your search, for example price list filetype:xlsx. DocJax adds both when you pick Excel.

Can I search Google Sheets the same way?

Public Google Sheets aren't Excel files. Use Google Drive search and pick Google Sheets under Where.

Are Excel files from the web safe?

Spreadsheets can contain macros. Open files from unknown sites with macros disabled, or open them in a browser viewer first.
