What Is DocumentCloud?

DocumentCloud is a nonprofit platform journalists use to upload, annotate and publish the documents behind their stories. When a newsroom embeds a lawsuit or a set of records in an article, it's often hosted there.

That makes it a strong source for primary documents on news events, with the text already read from each scan so it can be searched.

How to Search DocumentCloud

  1. Type names, companies, case names or places.
  2. Turn on exact phrase for a case name or a line you remember.
  3. Add a news outlet's name to find the documents behind its stories.

For official records straight from agencies, use government document search. Older public documents are often on Internet Archive search.

Who publishes on DocumentCloud?

Newsrooms, journalists and researchers. They upload the documents they report on, such as court records and public records requests.

Can I search inside DocumentCloud documents?

DocumentCloud reads the text of each document, and its own search can look inside them. Searching through Google finds documents by their titles and pages.
