l SCHOOL OF FISHERIES Applied Fisheries Laboratory Division of Biology and Medicine ktomiq Energy Commission We regret that the delay in informing you of the projected studies at Zniwetok this summer caused concern in planning the work A complete and detailed operationsplan is in preparation. This plan should be in your hands in a few days. In the meantime, the questions raised by your letter of March 28th can be answered The projected studies at Eniwetok should serve two purposes: (1) First, they should serve to continue the studies initiated at the time of the 3.948 tests which have been continued in the field during the summers of 1948 and 1949. (2) Secondly, they should provide an opportunityfor specific checks on the natural fauna and flora prior to the future testing The staff for the proposed expedition for this summer should be limited to six (6) specialistsin the principle lines of exploration. If routine assistance is available at Eniwetok from a labor pool to help with nets, traps, dredging, packaging, etc. in addition to the usual need for housekeepingand transportation,we think that the limited group will be able to complete their assignment. The suggested list of technical personnelwith their specialty and present place of employment is as follows: Name Specialty Present location Seymour, Allyn H. Plankton Biddulph, Orlin Plant Physiology Wash. State College,Pullman Palumbo, Ralph Marine Algae Dept. of Botany, U. of II. Tinker, Spencer %&vertebrates University of Hawaii

In addition to the technical staff, should be provided. For this post we should like to suggest Lt. CommanderGreer served with the 1949 Expedition in a similar capacity. He is farmiliar with our needs, and the conditions in the area, having formerly served as Port Director, Naval Station, Kwajalein. Commander Greer has, during the past winter season, supervisedthe handling and storage of our equipment at Knrajaleinand Pearl Earbor. I In addition to the Eniwetok studies, a rew days should be spent ’ at Bikini. !Pwo suggestedplans might be considered for the Bikini portion of the trip. Transportationmight be provided from Kwajalein by a P.B.M. to a temporary oamp on Bikini; or one of the field trips out of KwajalL&n by LSI (L) or LSM might be routed by Bikini for a .;:!- stopover of a few days while collectionswere being made. With good logistic support the entire trip should require about three weeks time. The last two weeks in July and the first week in August would be pref'errad. Transportationby air is suggested, for the round trip by boat would require at least a month's time in transit. Very sincerely yours,
