PRIVACY ACT MATERIAL REMOVED Shot number 2, Moth, was a 300-ioot tov.-er detonation which was fired at 5:hS a.n on February 22, 1955* The shot took place in Test Area 3 in Yucca Flat, '-ha cloud proceeded generally in a south easterly direction with fall-out occurring on U. S. 91 and 93 several miles southwest of Dry Lake. Fall-out in populated areas v«'as light] the highest monitoring reading observed in a populated area was 6.0 mr/hr. This reading occurred in Dry Lake, Nevada and corresponds to an Effective Biological Dose of 130 rar. The maximum air concentration found was h-k x 10“^ uc/m3 at Cedar City. This represents the average air concentration for a 28-hour period starting at shot Monitoring runs, which indicated activity substantially above background, ’were made on the desert road running north from Indian Springs, on the desert road from Groom Mine to Frenchman Flat, on the Game Preserve Road running north from U. S. 95> on U. S. 93 and 91 in the vicinity of Dry Lake, Nevada, and on PRIVACY ACT MATERIAL REMOVED BEST AVAILABLE COPY

PRIVACY ACT MATERIAL REMOVED . BEST AVAILABLE COPY The airway closure pattern for M)TH was set up prior to the shot as follows; 1. A circular area around Yucca Flat with a radius of 60 nautical miles was — ordered closed at all altitudes from 0515 to 0800. 2. A sector bounded by radii at 12Qo and 180°, lebgth of radius 125 nautical miles, was ordered closed from 15000 to 26000 feet (msl) between the hours 3. Finally, a large rectangular area, primarily in Arizona, was closed at the same altitudes as the above sector from 0800 to 1145. The boundaries of this area, as defined by Ceo/ref coordinates, were: _ Continue the 120° radius to KE0030, then due south to Tucson. Continue the 180° radius to EE0050, then southeast to HC000O. As the reports of the tracking aircraft came in, the following changes were made in the closure pattern: At 0630 the radius bounding sector defined in (2) above was shifted from 120° to 90°out to KH0000, then due south xxxkodtsxxx to Tucson. At 0645 the area south of the north edge of Airway Green 4 was opened at _____ __ At 0648 all areas were opened to traffic at 24000 feet (msl) and above. __________ The radioactive cloud was followed as indicated on the accompanying map from Reports fromB-25 tracker and from sampler aircraft were used The maximum height of the cloud decreased as it progressed on a general bearing of approximately 130° true, stabilizing at roughly 22000 feet (msl). The path . followed by the cloud took it north and east of Las Vegas, and extended for approximately 110 nautical miles when the tracking aircraft was recalled. ~tir LOW LEVEL TERRAIN SURVEY The low level tarrP8iy*CJ£ BiIWEfh»e aircraft which took

The fallout pattern as described by the aerial survey is in excellent agreement with the data obtained by ground survey parties. Two F-3U aircraft were flown into the cloud to determine possible contaminations levels in commercial aircraft, and the aircraft checked for contamination upon PRIVACY ACT MATERIAL REMOVED ^ BEST AVAILABLE COPY return.
