UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON College of Fisheries Laboratory of Radiation Ecology Mr. Torrany Me Craw Department of Energy Division of Occupational and rat and soil s pies that Bill Jati^dn'i.group collected at Enewetak in recall that at the Livermore meeting last June, Bill asked if we could make the analyses and if so, he would then try to find the funds to do so. Since ouri^rip for you to the Marshall Islands in Spring 1977 was cancelled because the LCU had problems nnd was not available, this pro vided a little break in our laboratory program and a few dollars. For these reasons, I voluntered for the Laboratory to accept the responsibilit ies for the analyses of Jackson's samples without a request for supplemental funds. I did discuss this with you at Livermore and you agreed. Incident ally, it turned out to be a much greater job that I anticipated. Vic Nelson is working on a report of the results of analysis of samples collected in 1975 and 1976 with Nat Greenhouse. His time is limited and so completion of the report is probably more than a month away. Allyn H. Seymour, Director Laboratory of Radiation Ecology

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON LABORATORY OF RADIATION ECOLOGY Subject: Results of Plutonium and Gamma Spectrum Analyses of Enewetak Plant, Rat, and Soil Samples Collected in Rat, plant, and soil samples from Enewetak Atoll were sent to our Laboratory by Dr. Jackson for gamma-counting and plutonium analysis. These samples The soil samples were repacked in our Laboratory's 2” x k” standard sample holders and counted for 400 minutes on Ge(Li) - detector system. The gamma counting results for soil samples are given in Table 1. The quantity of the individual rat and plant samples were not sufficient to fill the standard sample holder. These samples were put into the standard sample holder in batches of two or three for gamma-counting. The results of analyses for gamma-emitting radionuclides in rat and plant samples are given in Table 2. After gamma-counting, the samples designated for plutonium analysis were spiked with 2*t2Pu for chemical yield determination. The Laboratory's standard method was used for separation and purification of plutonium. Finally, plutonium was electroplated on a stainless steel disc and measured with a surface barrier alpha-detector and pulse-height analyzer. The results of plutonium analysis are shown in Table 3.
