Office of Territorial Affairs Dear Firs. Van Cleve; Thank you for your letter of June 26, 1979 concerning the meeting we It appears to me that the notes you enclosed accurately describe the points discussed at the meeting. l{owever, there is one minor correction and that is Fir. Tarlekehol went as IIenchi Ilalos ’s staff member rat?ler Also, pertaining to p:rt Ifl an pa~e 5, the point that }!r. Wies~all made is that those people tested on Bikini by the Whole BOdV counter may ha~’e been contaminated on Fonclap rather than Bikini, I am’ referring tb internal contamination from local foods ~rwn on Ron\{lap. Eneu , Bikini and the southern islands of Ronglap are identical in radiation back~,rol]n on !lon~lap before they migrated to Bikini in 1975. This was about the time a sudden jump was noted in the Whole Body Counter tests at Bikini which was attributed to coconut trees becomin~ productive. T’m concerned that it may have been caused by the 25 people from Ronglap who had been ingesting radion~]clides since 1957 when th~v were returned to Ronglap. Their systems had the opportunity to accunll]ate radionl]clides for 18 years prior to their migration to Rlkini. This brinqs up another question. Since Ronglap has more or the same level of Garna Rays beins emitted as on Eneu (indicated by the 19?8 22 years ago and the 13ikinians not allowed to return to Eneu for another have identical radiation levels. Ts there a double standard used here? You will find enc+isec! a portion of the statistics I ‘ve compiled of the people removed from Bikini in the Fall of 1979. T hope this information clarifies parr 10 and the latest Bikini relocation. Vest official repor< I’ve seen, indicate that almost all removed fron Bikini were Bikinian. This is certainly not the case. The Rikini/Kili Council released a they authorized them to do so as there were certain questions and req!lc~l made to the T,T. that were unresolved. The Bikini/Kili Council was oPposed to anyone living on Rikini )(ithout their approval. That may expln why so many people lining on Bikini were+non -Bikinian and ~’hy all most o“ removed did not go to !(ili to live. J Tt certainly was a pleasure seeing you again and an boner for me to attcl directed to Tomaki throu~h me has been passed on to him.
