APPLIED FISHERIES LABORATORY Biology and Medicine Division US Atomic Energy Commission Your letter of May 13 stating that "It now appears quite definite that we would like your group to make a resurvey study of both Bikini and Eniwetok"has been received and we s&l1 proceed to make pia%- accordingly. Present plans will be flexiblebecause of uncertainty about the followingpoints: (1) Nature of the survey. Is the survey to be pre-test, post-test, or both? The period immediately following a test is the period for which our data are most lacking and therefore (3) Available supportingfacilities. on scientificpersonnel. We are looking forward to meeting Drs. Plough and Wilbur in Seattle on May 31st and undoubtedlywe can resolve these and other problem8 at that time. With a terminaldate on the resurvey of September 1 or Shortly thereafter,a departurefrom Seattle about July 28, 35 days before September 1, is suggested. This date was arrived at in the following (1) 6-8 days for round trip air travel between Seattle and (2) 18 day8 at Eniwetok. Survey to include six preViOu8ly established stations plus three additional stations in test (3) 12 day8 for Bikini including2 days for round trip travel between Eniwetok and Bikini. Ten days at Bikini would allow for the survey of 4 reef and 1 lagoon stations. This program is dependentupon a surface ve88e1, such a8 an UI, for transportationbetween Enlwetok and Bikini and for quarters at Bikini. If a vessel is not availablea limited survey might possibly be made if a few men with a rubber landing bOat could be flown to Bikini in a PBY or similar

The need for supportingfacilitiesand non-scientificpersonnel is about the same as suggestedby Dr. Donaldson on Pages 9 and 10 of InaL-30. Supportingfacilitiesneeded are as follows: Round trip air transportationfrom Seattle to Eniwetok for 6 men and 600 pounds of equipment. Heavy equipment, not to exceed 2,000 pounds, could be sent out in advance by surface vessels. Living accommodationsfor 6 men of officer status either on board ship or on one of the resident islands. One hundred and fifty square feet of covered laboratory A refrigeratingunit of about 15 cubic feet capacity operatingat 0 F. Refrigerationshould be in a unit not being used for food storage. Small surface vessels for transportationwithin the lagoon. 50 pounds of dry ice at time*of departure from Eniwetok fnr An ICI or similar vessel for Bikini work and poasibly for living quarters at Eniwetok (See (2) above). If (7) not available,a flight to Bikini in a PBY or similar Ron-scientificpersonnelneeded are as follows: (1) A naval liaison officer. (2) A boat crew for (5) above. (3) Two helpers to assist with gear, collections, etc. I have forwardeda copy of your letter to Dr. Donaldson and expect to have his suggestionsby the time Drs. Plough and Wilbur Visit US. The latest word from the Donaldsons Is that they are all busy and thoroughlyenjoying their tour.
