Occupational Radi ation Exposure Work was continued throughout the year on the study begun i n 1966 for the AEC, Division of Biology and Medicine and Division of Operational Safety, on the " Lifetime Health and Mortality Experience of AEC and AEC Contractor Employees with Occupational Radiation Exposure". The study is being carried out under the direction of Dr. Thomas Mancuso, Research Professor,University of Pittsburgh. Hanford Plant employee data was coordinated by the Foundation with systems design and programming being provided by Computer Sciences Corporation and radiation exposure data by Bat tell e - Northwest Laboratory, of the project is to establish relationships,if any, between mortality patterns and levels of radiation exposure. li shed were continued : (1)establishment of a series of cohorts,(Z)Social Security record survey t o determine those who have died,(3)to establish the mortality pattern and (4)evaluation of the relationships. The procedures in i ti a1 l y estabInformation on other environmental exposures was accumulated in order to control extraneous variables such as medical x - ray exposures o r work environmental exposures. Auxiliary data was necessary to properly group the individuals with different types o f exposures o r combinations o f exposures so that the effects bf these extraneous variables could be included in conclusions derived regarding occupational exposure t o radi at i on. Promethium Metabolism A joint project with Bat tell e Northwest Laboratories was initiated to study the biological effects of promethium on animals and man and to study the eff qc ts of DTPA, ach elating agent, inthe removal o f plutonium from animals and man. Preliminary conclusions indicated that promethium metabolism is similiar to plutonium metabolism and that DTPA was effective in increasing excretion of promethium.

Other subjects u n d e t investigation were: (1) investigation of trace elements t o determine their effects on man (2) effects o f short and.long term exposure t o high temperature and high humidity on man (3) our policy in regard t o tetanus toxoid immunization ( 4 ) evaluation of a screening test for protosigmoidoscopy examinations. Gasket Studi Study was resumed late in the year of the study of the sealing characteristics of HEPA filter gaskets. The purpose was t o develop performance data leading t o specifications for an optimum gasket. The findings are t o be presented a t the International Atomic Energy Agency-AEC 10th Air Cleaning Conference, August 1968. Flicker-Fusion unit became more stabilized t o study the effects of smoking on performance, Preliminary results appeared to justify further study of the relationship of smoking t o job performance, ( 2 ) relationship o f preemployment screening tests scores and some aspects of job performance such as absenteeism, ( 3 ) means for evaluating factors relevant t o safety climate and performance, ( 4 ) relationship of personality variables t o j o b performance and job satisfaction of participants in the technical graduate program, ( 5 ) short term counsel 1 i n g techniques, ( 6 ) psycho1 ogi cal t e s t Val idati ons. ( 1 ) Procedures for the use of the Critical
