Radioisotopes are routinely used in the medical profession for the diagnosis and treatment o f disease. Ridge Associated Universities i n Oak Ridge, Tennessee, has a number o f scanning devices which chart the uptake of low-level radioactivity i n patients in a diagnostic procedure. The scanner, which contains a sensitive radiation detection system, passes slowly over the patient charting the uptake of the radioactivity i n the patient ' s body and providing physicians with data on which to make diagnostic determinations. Work of the Medical Division i s supported by the Energy Research and Development Administration. The Medical Division of Oak laboratory (CARL) in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, i n an attempt t o better understand the mechanisms o f radiation and chemical mutagenesis . Some radiation-stimulated mutatuion in agriculturally important plants result i n such attributes as earlier development, disease resistance and improved sources (shown i n the background) which are loaded witha radioisotope known as cobalt 60. 0R0-68-613-11 In this CARL facility, plants can be position near radiaiton
