Dear Major Dauer: I think it might be wise t o send the enclosed letter to Captain Shilling in the OXR since he may be puzzled a t no more definite response t o his letter and t o his offer t o appear before the Advisory Committee atits meeting on Saturday. Per bp s it would be also just as well t o show this letter addressed t o Captain. Shilling t o B4r. Derry on whose judgment Is hall rely, if he thinks it best not t o send the letter at this time. ihajor Vhxwell Dauer Atomic Energy Commission

Dear Captain Shilling: I want to write you a note t o express my thanks t o you for offering t o attend the meeting of the Advisory Committee f o r Biology and Medicine and t o explain why we were not prepared t o accept your kind offer to attend the meeting of October 11. The meeting last Saturday was devoted t o the attempt t o obtain the services as Medical Director of D r . Shields Warren, and it was a t least partially successfhl in that if his hospital sansehhs, Dr, !7arren dl1 cane as Medical Director for three months or more, but our Cam - mittee did not have the time t o consider any programs anywhere near as extensive and varied as those which the ONR has been carrying out and whichwere enumerated i n your memorandum t o Admiral Straws. 3arren will come on the job in the very near future and i n time to cm fer with you ina thorough and satisfactory fashim before our next meeting on November 7, when I should hope we might be able t o have presented your problem t o the Cammittee. I expect though that Dr. I realize that the delay is a disappointment t o you but I am afraid that presentation of the matter last Saturday would have resulted i n an equal sense of time misspent since i n any event, we should have had t o postpone decisions until the Atanic Energy Comnission had a biedical Director on the job, Office of Naval Research
