OAK RIDGE NATIONAL LABORATORY MANAGED BY MARTIN MARIETTA ENERGY SYSTEMS. INC. FOR WE U.S. DEPARTMEWOF ENERGY POS 1 OFFICE BOX ZOO8 OAK RIDGE. TENNESSEE 37831-6275 Post Office Box 2008 Oak Ridge, Tennessee 378314269 Notification of Planned Radiotracer Studies - Oak Ridge National Laboratory Building 1504 Laboratory Streams This letter notifies the Department of Energy (DOE) that research personnel at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (OWL) plan to release small amounts of radiotracers into two experimental laboratory stream in Building 1504 during four experimental sets of injections. The laboratory streams discharge in approximately equal proportions to six ponds southwest of Building 1504, which then overflow to the Northwest Tributary. The purpose of the study is to determine the effect of longitudinal nutrient depletion on nutrient uptake and cycling. %le this release is not a wastewater discharge, and the amount of radiotracers involved is very small, notification of the release to the Tennessee Department of Environmental and Conservation (TDEC) is prudent. Each experiment will include the addition of 0.1 millicurie (mCi) of phosphorus-33 (P-33) as phosphate to both experimental laboratory streams. Both stream will receive one injection during the scheduled week, and those injections will be on different days during that week. Per DOE Order 5400.5, the DOE Derived Concentration Guideline (DCG) for P-33 is 200 x IO4 mCi/L and will not be exceeded during the experiment. The attached table lists the experiment schedule and relevant P-33 concentrations for the study. All personnel involved in these studies will be trained in the safe use of radionuclides, will wear appropriate protective clothing, and will be monitored by a Health Physicist during the experiment.
