State of New Mexico Assistant Regional Engineer Dear Ur. Holy: I apologize for not haring submitted this report at an earlier date. After reporting to Ur. Placak at Mercury, Nevada, the first few days of ny active duly were spent working as a courier, mobile monitor, and doing some laboratory work. About July 1, I was sent to Mesquite, Nevada to temporarily replace the Zone Commander while he was called in to see a shot. On July 6 I was sent to Cedar City Utah and remained there as Zone Ccmmander until August 16. I saw about 6 shots at distances of 100 to 200 miles frcjm the Test Site, but was never called in to see a shot from the Tsst Site. This was no doubt due to the mazy shot postponements which occurred during sy tour of duly. I was requested to speak before several civic clubs concerning Radio active Fallout and had time to do considerable studying on the subject. However, I was never in an area where I could get recordings above background on a survey meter, and ny cumulative film badge reading On the whole, the duly was most enjoyable and enlightening. I also had the opportunity to have discussions with numerous fellow public health workers from mazy parts of the country. I sincerely hope that I may again be considered for active duly for a limited time to gain further experience in Radiological Health or other phases of I again wish to suggest that the U.S.P.H.S. always contact our employer iifectly pointing out the educational and experience advantages of ary given active duly request. The education and experience are advantageous not only to the officer, but to the employer as well, and this should be brought to the attention of the employer.

This would, of course, be done after first ascertaining the desire and availability of the individual officer. Vy only criticism of tsy last duty concerns the method of payment. Vy first check was received in about 5 weeks, and the Service still owes me on several items totaling some $500*
