Archive description

A letter to Union Carbide Nuclear Company dated October 17, 1962, from the Atomic Energy Commission notifies all managers of Field Offices that any requirements (AEC and cost-type contractors) for mercury are to be cleared with the Supply Division prior to purchase. The notification was made due to the substantial quantities of mercury which were available at the Y-12 Plant. In order to be in a position to supply material to meet any requirements, it was requested that a nominal quantity of one thousand 76-pound flasks of mercury be reclassified to excess inventory. Union Carbide was asked to furnish information on the material which is reclassified to excess inventory by type - single, double, or triple distilled, purity, and a spectrographic analysis showing percent of various impurities. The correspondence dated November 21, 1962, was a reply to letter of October 17, 1962, sent by the Atomic Energy Commission. Spectrographic analyses made of mercury in three flasks, picked at random, that had been stored for about three years were included. The mercury available for excess had not been distilled since its removal from the process equipment. Also, a letter dated November 26, 1962, from Union Carbide Nuclear Company in reply to the letter dated October 17, 1962, wrote that the reclassification for one thousand 76-pound flasks of mercury to excess inventory would be accomplished on their records for this month. The mercury for excess had not been distilled since its removal from the process equipment, and 76,000 pounds of mercury would be set up on their excess inventory at a price of $3 per pound, or a total of $228,000.
