Hanford Operations Office Division of Research, Washington CALCULATIONS OF KRYPTON RELEASES FROM HANFORD Reference is made to my memorandum to you of April l£, 1952 on the above subject and to a subsequent conversation with Paul Hoisted, In the above memorandum it was requested that the method of basing Kr-85 release figures on Pu production figures be evalua ted for reliability as compared with the presently used basis of power data, recognizing that at the present time the two methods are not completely independent, and that the use of the method thought most likely to produce the more accurate results be adopted. Confirming my conversation with Paul Hoisted, I would like to request that krypton release data to date be computed on the basis of Pu production figures for purposes of co-parison with data computed by the other method and also for the reason that when the fission cam!" (first results are ejected in a few weeks! these "values will be immediately applicable to this method of Hanford krypton release computation. It would be desirable to have these figures on a monthly basis for the past as well as continuing into the future,. In addition we believe it desirable to continue, until further decisions are made, the regular reporting, as hap hp-oo -in Aha. past, of krypton releases based bn power data. In effect, these requests amount to supplementing presently re ported data with parallel figures based on Pu data. In order to correct all data for the difference in krypton-85 yield from Pu fission as compared to U-235 fission, as was discussed at the April 10 meeting at Chicago we have, after reviewing available information, decided that a value of 0.09% should be used for the fission yield of Kr-85 from Pu. and would like to request that corrections be made on this basis. At the time such corrected Kr-85 release data are furnished we will appreciate receiving a description of the method of applying such corrections. Uvanks very much for your£ and G.E.’s help in obtaining these Due to film deterioration, portions of this document may be illegible.
