Interview with Dr. J. Garr ott Allen by Dr. Marks and Mr. Miazga on 4/19/74 a t 9:00 am. The interview was held in Dr.Allen ' s office at Stanford University.Dr.Allen is a Professor of Surgery and was formerly Chairman of the Department of Surgery at Stanford University. on the Metallurgical Laboratory staff at the time of the injections. When we started our interview with Dr. Allen, he did not seem t o know the purpose of our visit. Atlhough I had discussed it briefly withHm on the phone the previous day, he seemed to think that our visit was concerned with Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission activities rather than plutonium injections. It took about 5or 10 minutes of discussion for us to acquaint him with the fact that plutonium was injected into patients in Chicago i n 1945. in the interview did he indicate any knowledge of the injection of plutonium Our reason for interviewing Dr.Allen was that Dr. Leon Jacobson had previously mentioned Dr.Allen as a person who might either have made the injections or had knowledge of the injections.Dr. Jacobson had stated that he and Allen were the only clinicians who were cleared to conduct this type of activity at the time.Dr. Allen confirmed Dr. Jacobson's contention that Allen and Jacobson were the only members of the Laboratory with concurrent appointments i n both Billings Hospital and the Metallurgical Laboratory. He reported to I Dr. Jacobson who in turn reported to Dr. Robert Stone. When we mentioned could provide no information that might relate Dr. Nickson o r anyone else t o a plutonium injection program. Dr.Allen said that he joined the staff of the Metallurgical Laboratory He stated that he did have a - 1 at the University of Chicago on July 23, 1944.
