Rosen, director of the los alamos meson physics facility at lasl, send documents to feynman to show that the accelerator was designed to accommodate an experimental program, rather than the other way around. Rosen relates that the original thrust for pion therapy capability developed because a close relative died of cancer in 1960. Rosen drew on fermi's remark that negative pions would be the ideal therapeutic radiation. Rosen calculated the required intensity of 100 rads/minute at 1ma. Their enclosures are not attached to the letter.
