TO : Distribution DATE: June 21, 1976 7 1.2278 Now that the machine i s running agdn and w e are beginning t o treat patients at Biowd, it seems appropriate t o define areas of 1Lp-3 activity in the bid program and usign section msponribility t o SQW individuals in the Group. Three sections will be formed within MP-3 t o handle swe major components of the bioned program. .Channel Operation, Maintenance, and Computer Development Section This section w i l l maintain and operate the channel for the biomedical program, ptoviding round-the-clock support for the experimental and clinical programs. It will have responsibility for developing t h e computer control system for automated treatment, beam monitoring, and data acquisition. It w i l l be responsihlo for providing the operations interface tothe main proton boa line personnel, and to the UBI Biomedical Physics Croup. All improvements i n the facility, such a s gas systems, wiring plant Changes, power supply modifications, etc. -will be implemented and/or supervised by t h i s section with change control exercised by t h e Section Leader. This section will be responsible for carrying out the experimmtrl and calculational physics necessary f o r documenting the bioaed pion beams in toms of physical and spatial characteristics. This section will work closely with theUW Biomedical Physics Group i n developing new becrms f o r radiobiology and therapy, with the ultimate goal of developing a model of the channel sufficiently accurate so t h a t no furthcr EIWPC work should be required. Research on stopping region visualization may also be undertaken by t h i s section. The development of accurate input parameters * for beam model development will also be within the charter of

oBiomod User Coordination and Microdosimetry Section This section will coordinate the programs of radiobiology users who ate outside the programmatic efforts supported by the UIW/LASL subcontr8ct effort. This includes providing dosimetry and special beam development for these programs, assisting in scheduling on design mad inst81lation if requested and if possible under ex%rting fundamental prograa in microdorimetry aimed at a better understanding of pion beam under the conditions required for both thempy md to develop pion beam aodels for possible inclusion in treatment The NP-5 Group Office will maintain overall supervision of urd reIn addition, this section will c w out a They uill provide microdosimetry data as necessary sponsibility for tho LAUPF biomedical effort. will continue t o act as Biomed Channel Scheduling Supervisor for the The MP-5 personnel assignments t o these sections arc as follows: Chmnel Operation, Maintenance, and Computer Development Sectib J. Helland, Section Leader 2. Chmnel Physics Section M. Pbciotti, Section Leader 3. User Coordination and Microdosimetry Section John Dicello, Section Leader
