Thank you for your letter of November 28 reporting on the meeting of the Advisory Committee for Biology and Medicine atthe Savannah River Off ice November 14- 15. The subjects of tritium releases and thermal effluents are timely ones from the standpoint 9,f power reactor siting and operation. that the Savannah River Sent provideq special opportunities to study the environmental effects of these releases. Plans are being made to increase the efforts within the present rather restrictive budgets to take advantage o f unique conditions found in the Sw area. Your comments on the University of Georgia‘s Savannah River Ecology Laboratory program are of interest. Most of the work done on that program,. - a s you may know, has not been directed towards making observations on thermal alterations. With the clearer identification of AEC ‘ s more immediate requirements in this field we expect to see a greater emphasis placed on thermal studies by this group. The possibility that reducing security restrictions in certain areas may improve the opportunities to do research on thermal effects is being investigated now. I note that you will be receiving additional information on these problems a t your next meeting from a representative of the SRL.

Iam pleased to learn that the ACBM will also have an opportunity to meet with Dr.Lauri st on Taylor at its next meeting; the activities of the National Council on Radiation Protection and Measurements (NCRP) are of considerable interest to the AEC and this opportunity for direct discussion with Dr. Taylor should prove most valuable. Ilook forward to receiving the report of your meeting t o be held
