Director, The Jackson Laboratory Thank you for your letter o f March 14,v1968, reporting on the 123rd meeting of the AEC Advieory Committee for Biology and Medicine. Your comments on the difficulties related to the full and complete integration of the MSU/AEC Plant Research Laboratory, University of Michigan, into the graduate training and research program have been noted. This is a general problem for which there appears t o be no uniform solution. You may be sure that every encouragement will be afforded the Laboratory t o undertake interdisciplinary research projects and t o take steps to realize as fulla cooperation with other departments as can useful$y be accomplished. The Commission, at a recent meeting, approved the report and recommendat ions of the ACBM subcommittee concerning the renewal of the contract of the Laboratory of Nuclear Medicine and Radiation Biology atthe University of California, Los Angeles. The Commission believes that this is an excel.lent report, fairly and fully reflecting the situation at UCI A and making worthwhile recommendations. The ACBM and its subcommittee areto be commended for their helpful efforts in our behalf. Copies of the report have been forwarded to the Joint Committee on Atomic Energy, and we shall probably be discussing the report with the JCAE staff soon. I have been informed that the subcommittee of the Advisory Committee which you appointed, together with other experts in the field of human radiobiology, met on March 26, 1968, to discuss the proposal of Dr. Robley Evans fora National Center of Human Radiobiology. We shall look forward to receiving the report of the subcommittee with its recommendations tothe AEC concerning the continuance of studies of humans exposed t o radium, mesothorium, and other internal emitters.
