Archive description

First volume of series of handbooks issued by los alamos to inform employees of the various possible health hazards associated with radiation and radioactive materials. The handbook emphatically urged employees to follow two basic rules: 1) know all possible radiation hazards in a given job, and 2) see that proper protective procedures are followed in the job assignment. Handbook explains the harmful effects of electrons, alpha particles, gamma-rays, and neutrons, radiations associated with plutonium, polonium, and radiolanthium relative to information available in 1945. Hemplemann outlines the medical research program of lasl and prioritizes four projects as follows: 1) diagnosis treatment of radiation disease, 2) detection of plutonium in the lung, 3) detection of early radiation damage, and 4) the removal of plutonium from the body.
