The objectives of this project were to study the chemical and radioche mical composition of solid fallout as a function of particle size, zer o-point environment, time and distance of collection, and gross decay characteristics is studied. The chemical and radiochemical nature of liquid fallout and base surge is investigated. A sample of solid fall out from shot 1 was separated into 14 particle-size fractions which we re analyzed for strontium 89, zirconium 95, molybdenum 99, barium 140, and cobalt 144. In each case the activity per unit weight of active particles below 50 microns was found to decrease regularly with increa sing size, but in a different manner for each nuclide, indicating radi ochemical fractionation. Above 50 microns, the relationships were obs cure. The gross decay did not vary at all with particle size at early times, and only slightly at later times. In the fallout from shots 1 and 3, strontium 89 and barium 140 showed a greater tendency to conce ntrate in the liquid phase than the other fission products studied. S hot 4 fallout samples, principally liquid, indicated that the relative concentrations of strontium 89 and barium 140 increase with time of c ollection. No information was obtained on variations of composition w ith distance.
