ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION SITES INVENTORY Closure Report Summary Facility Name: Nevada Test Site, Area 1 Site Identification Number: 01-22-03 Site: Fonner location of two drums On September 17, 1990, Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Co., Inc. (REECo) Environment and Health Division personnel identified and photographed two 5.: -gallon drums near UE-1r (water well). The drums were described as empty and were reported to be located 0.1 mile east ofUE-lr and 800 feet north ofUE-lr, respectively (Ref. No. 0501). Based on the site photographs, both of the drums were located on the ground, and one drum appeared to have been nestled in wood debris. Stained soils were not evident from the site photographs, and available documentation did not indicate that sampling was performed. Based on IT Corporation (IT) review of available, site-specific documentation, the drums at this site were removed by REECo personnel on July 16, 1991 (Ref. Nos. 2135 and 2222). Two photographs were taken by REECo personnel to document the waste removal operations (Ref. No. 213 l ). Based on standard Nevada Test Site (NTS) practices. the drums were •mrvPyed for radioactive contamination by a REECo Health Physics Department technician prior to 54.35 and 2222). Then, following standard practice, the drums were released for transport ai gement Operations personnel to a fenced yard at the CN-Cl I Reclaimable/Recyclable Mater o. 2222) According to information gathered during the IT Environmental Restoration Sites 1s such a; these were sent to the Area 9 Class I Landfill or the Area 23 Class I Landfill During IT review of the available docun d7 in the actual number of drums (i.e., two to four) was noted. Although only two drums were o 7 'lo. 0501), a new (third) drum was documented in REECo's Health Physics Department w ummary for the week ending July 21, 1991 (Ref. No. 2164.35). Four drums were reported as 1 .. muveu 1Iom me site in a REECo Detailed Site Activity Summary for NTS Cleanup and Restoration dated May 14, 1992 (Ref. No. 2135). Based on the majority of the information found during document review. it is probable that the third and fourth drums were encountered in the field and removed during REECo's waste removal operations. On May 26, 1993, an IT field crew identified the exact area depicted in REECo's original site photographs (Ref. No. 050 l ). A search was conducted in the location identified _by REE Co near UE-1 r, and no drums were found. Wood pallets remained. No soil staining was observed. and no sampling was conducted. Based on this field effort, it was concluded that the drums had been No further action required. 8/2/95 U.S. DEPARTMENT OF ENERGY NEVADA OPERATIONS OFFICE

ENVIRONMENTAL RESTORATION SITES INVENTORY Closure Report Summary Facility Name: Nevada Test Site. Area 1 Site Identification Number: 01-24-01 Site: Fonner location of two batteries On January 17, 1991, Reynolds Electrical & Engineering Co., Inc. (REECo) Environment and Health Division personnel identified and photographed two batteries on the ground in the Area I Shaker Plant. The batteries were described as located west of tanker trailers (Environmental Restoration Inventory Site Number 01-01-01 ), west of the Drilling Painters Shop, and north of a transformer marked "non-PCB" (Ref. No. 0501 ). Based on the site photograph. the batteries appeared intact. Stained soils were not evident from the photograph, and available documentation did not indicate that sampling was performed. WASTE REMOV AUDISPOSAL SUMMARY Based on IT Corporation (IT) review of available. site-specific documentation. the two batteries at this site were removed by REECo personnel on October 23. 1991 (Ref. No. 2135). Two photographs were taken by REECo personnel to document that the batteries had been removed (Ref. No. 2131 ). Available documentation indicates that the batteries were not located within a designated radiation or potential radiation area (Ref. No. 2084). Based on standard Nevada Test Site practices, the batteries were surveyed for radioactive contamination by a REECo Health Physics Department technician prior to removal from the site (Ref. No. 2084). Then. following standard practice, the batteries were released for transport and removed by REECo Waste Management Operations personnel to a fenced yard at the CN-Cl 1 Reclaimable/ Recyclable Materials Holding Area in Area 3 (Ref. No. 2084). Site identification numbers were not tracked following removal of waste from the original site. Lead-acid batteries were then sent off site for reclamation of the lead at an approved lead smelter operation in California. Battery transportation was handled by Sheldon Battery of Las Vegas until the contract was terminated. Following contract termination. the remaining intact batteries at CN-Cl 1 were then sent to the Mercury Salvage and Excess Yard On May 26. 1993, an IT field crew identified the exact area depicted in REECo's inventory site photograph (Ref. No. 0501 ). A search was conducted in the location identified in the Area l Shaker Plant near the transformer, and no batteries were found. The transformer and the tank (site number 01-01-01) remain. No soil staining was observed. and no sampling was conducted. Based on this field effort, it was concluded that the batteries had been removed. No further action required. NEVADA OPERATIO NS OFFICE
